However, there are several options for recording phone conversations using the iPhone, Android, a landline or a computer, which will provide radio or podcast-quality audio or for those journalists without shorthand.

Apps for recording are limited because recording calls is illegal in many countries and much of the advice in online forums suggests jail-breaking your phone.

The US offers one iPhone app – called Recorder – that allows you to record outgoing calls.

Reporters in the US also have the option of using Google Voice for recording incoming calls, which is not yet available in the UK.

    * Call the interviewee;
    * Press the + button on your iPhone and dial your own phone number;
    * Listen to the voicemail message and, after the beep, carry out the interview;
    * You will then have your recording in your voicemail;
    * To download this you will have to run a mini-jack into recording software, such as free open-source Audacity, and play it back in real time;
    * You will be limited by the duration of your interview.

This is one area where Android has the upper hand over iPhone as there is an app that allows you to record a phone interview – and it is free. Record My Call doesn't work on every handset but you will find a full list of compatible phones here.

5. How to: record a phone interview using a landline and an MP3 recorder

You will need to buy an adaptor, which will plug in to your MP3 recorder, such as this one. The basic ones cost less than £20. Simply plug in to your MP3 player and hit record.

6. How to: record an interview using Skype

Skype provides great recording quality, much better using a landline or mobile, and it is free (though you may end up paying for a head set and for one of the recorders).

The other person will need a Skype account and to be in front of a computer. Alternatively you can buy Skype credit and call a phone from your computer at low cost rates. It is a great option for recording international interviews without spending a penny.

iPhone 5 Enters Final Phase Of Testing

The iPhone 5 has reportedly entered the final stage of testing, and is already being hauled around by "high level Apple and carrier executives." That's the word today from the the tech site 9 to 5 Mac, which puts the launch date of the iPhone 5 – or whatever the device is going to be called (iPhone 4S?) – at September of this year. Just in time for the Christmas rush! And also more or less in line with the once-a-year Apple launch schedule.

9 to 5 Mac says this newest iPhone won't necessarily get 3G FaceTime support – you'll probably still need to hook up with a Wi-Fi connection to video chat with friends and family – but over-the-air software updates look increasingly certain.

Thus far, no Apple employees have left a spare iPhone 5 around a California bar, so we have no idea what the phone will look like. The received wisdom in the tech blogosphere is that the iPhone 5 will closely resemble the iPhone 4 – boxy, flat, slim. But back in May, at least one tech site reported that Apple had invested in machines equipped to cut curved glass, which could mean Apple is rejiggering the shape of its popular smartphone.

Over at CNET, David Carnoy mulls the possibility that the new iPhone will include 4G capability. This makes sense – Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all rolled out (or are in the process of rolling out) 4G networks. An iPhone that did not include a 4G antenna could make Apple look behind the game, especially considering the profusion of 4G phones which have hit the market in recent months. Then again, the original iPhone did not offer 3G, even though the network was in full effect at the time.

New iPhone Release By Apple This September

Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference passed last week without a new iPhone being launched so it’s time for the rumour mill to get started.

Apple has typically used its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco to unveil the new iPhone. The iPhone 3G, the 3GS and the iPhone 4 were all announced at WWDC but this year Apple chose to focus on software.

The latest rumours suggest that the next iPhone will be launched in September. According to 9to5Mac, the new iPhone has reached the final testing phase. Their source says “the current plan is for a September launch”.

The source doesn’t specify whether the device released in September will be a completely new handset - the iPhone 5 - or a slightly souped-up version of the iPhone 4, to be named iPhone 4S or something similar.

For the last few years, Apple has announced upgrades to its iPod range in September, in time for the holiday season. If the new iPhone is announced in September, its arrival would coincide with the launch of the new version of iOS 5, the operating system that runs iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, which was announced at WWDC.

Apple seldom details its plans in advance, which is why the pre-announcement of the contents of the WWDC keynote were such a surprise. It’s possible that this is a permanent shift in Apple’s annual schedule, with iOS being updated at WWDC to give developers time to upgrade their apps before a new iPhone in September.
